Fra oggetto estetico e oggetto etnografico

Any human product (ethnographic object) has an intrinsic aesthetic form and value, though it underlies and supports its primary everyday practical function. What today is “design” has always existed as handicraft. Conversely, even art works perform their aesthetic function as ethnographic objects, to supply their pure aesthetic effect to everybody’s everyday life. Pure art has the practical function to draw attention to the necessary formal appearance which contributes to the understanding of the world.

The art politically and philosophically committed (Picasso’s Guernica, for example) uses its form to make it compelling the topic of its commitment. The art formalistically more self-reflexive chooses more traditional themes (nudity in Les démoiselles d’Avignon) to highlight its formal originality in comparison with tradition.

Both pure art and applied arts (design) access to the public of the users through communication. Communication lubricates the passage between creation and consumption, and the point of contact and separation of these two activities is the market. The creator, become the seller, and the user, become purchaser, quantify their convergence in the price, which summarizes the meaning and value of the two functions.
